Update: My Grandfather, Jim
My earlier post about my grandpa was a bit dismal and looking ahead to the future which inevitably will cease to include him.
Here’s an update:
My grandfather, in order to breathe, has pretty much spent his nights and most of his elder years in a recliner. If you’ve ever sat in one, you can understand how that position is consistently comfortable over long periods of time.
However, the downside to his comfort is that my grandfather has not had the confidence to lay flat on his back and this presented a problem.
I do not have the medical details, but there is a procedure (essentially a bypass but not quite) that going through his leg and upwards, would increase the blood flow into the heart and improve his circulation.
This procedure requires that his body remain flat and rigid for more than a half an hour. Take the past eight years of just “reclining” in a chair, and try thirty minutes of laying flat… presents a problem for an eighty-four year old man.
My grandfather, after several attempts, was finally able to undergo this procedure and the word from my family in New Orleans is as though he has a new lease on life. If you recall from the previous entry about my grandfather, there were some pictures of him. He was not very colorful, almost gray in his skin tone. The word is that his color has returned, as has his appetite so I suspect that he’ll be gaining weight again. These are indicators that his health has dramatically improved.
Now, this isn’t to say that he’s tip top and par with Moses as an eighty-four year old, but what this does provide is more time.
When the end comes for the ones you love, no matter how much you invested into being with them, we’ll always regret that we didn’t have more time.
I suggest you find someone you love and let them know, “I can’t get enough of you.” Because you can’t. It’s love’s greatest quality, and also it’s greatest source of regret.
